As a video creator, one of the things we decided to do this October was to show you the many ways you can create creepy videos yourself and use them to dress your social media profile and website with the scary season!

And before you start thinking that you need a huge budget to jump on that wagon, I am here to tell you that you can do a lot with very little.

So, the first thing you should look to create is a spooky atmosphere:

You do that by adding ominous music. If you actually take a closer look at the videos being paraded with TikTok under the hashtag #horror most of them use music as their number one component to make you uncomfortable. It’s not the video itself that sets the mood, it’s the music that goes with it that sells the feeling they are trying to create.

Add some effects. And by that, I don’t mean some expensive MCU things. Nowadays most video apps come with the certain video effects that you can use to make the video disturb the viewer. It can be a glitch, the image distorting, shaking, even shooting a scene from a different and inconvenient angle will work wonders to disturb the viewer without having to flash a monster at them.

The things that usually scare us aren’t too elaborate. Sometimes, the scary thing about what we are afraid of is usually the “normal” that accompanies it. You don’t have to be in a graveyard to feel afraid. You can be typing away at your computer when a weird noise catches your attention and makes your survival instincts peak. The most successful horror movies are the ones that feature the humanity of the situation using unprofessional recording devices. So don’t feel pressure to create something out of a movie set, chances are, the more home-made you are able to do it, the scarier it is going to be.

Now to light!

I have talked in the past about the importance of good lighting in a video. It is one of those things that can actually either enhance or destroy what you are trying to convey. But scary videos are where you are able to break the rules and actually play with them.

These are a few things that you can do:

Obscure through lighting. This helps you create mystery, it induces tension and suspense.

Distorting through lighting. When you see a face, even if it is in a darker atmosphere, you don’t normally see shadows in a face. Creating shadows in faces sends a trigger alarm in our brain simply because it doesn't really happen in nature. That’s the whole reason behind people putting a lamp below their face when they are about to tell a scary story. It’s about making you uncomfortable.

Manipulate shadows. We are simple creatures that are afraid of the unknown and when we don’t see a clear picture of what is happening, our brain loves to fill in the gaps.

I hope you find these hacks and tips helpful and you venture out to create your very own creepy videos. And if you do, let me know, tag me in them or DM them! I would love to see them.
